Program Update - Youth Shooting Sports by Rick Walker

I wish to describe to the membership as a whole how the Youth Shooting Sports Program is organized so that we may all feel comfortable, confident and proud of supporting our youth in the shooting sports program.

At the July General Meeting an inaccurate portrayal of how the Youth Shooting Sports Program is conducted was presented by an individual who is not familiar with my program. Since I was out of town and could not attend the July meeting I was not able to refute the information.

My name is Rick Walker and I am the KRGC Youth Shooting Sports Chairman. I have been a board member of this club for 8 years. I was recruited by KRGC to run the youth shooting program. I was asked to bring my successful 4-H shooting program into the club and open up the program to KRGC youth. I have been the Lake County 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor, trainer and coordinator for 10 years.

I use and teach the safety standards of the NRA and 4-H Shooting Sports. The standards are nearly identical except that 4-H is more strict because it addresses Youth needs specifically. I combined the KRGC and 4-H program together to utilize both standards. It is also a benefit for our non-profit club to interact with other organizations within the community. Many of our youth are both 4-H and KRGC members. I also run two Boy Scout Rifle Merit Badge shoots and a Boy Scout Venture Crew shoot each year at our range allowing them to complete their badge requirements.

My program has been building for the last 8 years and the 4-H portion has become the largest 4-H Shooting Sports Program in California. All 4-H Leaders involved have been fingerprinted and background checked to work with children. Importantly, our training includes how to instruct youth shooters without touching, to maintain propriety. This is why I don't usually ask general membership to assist at my youth shooting events. One parent from each participant is required to stay and assist in supervising, no drop and runs. New shooters have one on one coaching from the bench with one of my coaches and an adult supervising the coaching, for additional safety back up. Experienced shooters (determined by me) shoot from the bench with a safety supervisor overseeing several positions.

At every meeting, safety and proper handling of a firearm is reviewed. Range rules are gone over and they learn how to set up various targets safely and to clean up when the fun is over. A variety of firearms and targets are introduced to shooters depending on their experience level and all are eligible to participate in the NRA qualification program. We try to have meetings once a month from spring to fall. The meetings are 4 hours in length. We are trained to help kids become marksman and to enjoy the shooting sports safely. Our number one goal is to teach kids how to be safe around guns and in using them. Through the process they learn patience, dedication and develop life skills, such as mental discipline and focused concentration. If we want the sport to continue the gun club to prosper and pro gun laws to happen we have to support youth shooting sports and remember that youth grow into adults who vote. This information is to assure the KRGC members that our Youth Program is on track, growing, and not going anywhere.

The Family Fun Shoot was a huge success. Over 140 people attended and had a great time shooting. There was a wide variety of targets out on the range. Did you know when you shoot a .50 cal. muzzleloader at a #10 can filled with flour that flour shoots about 20 feet in the air? That's a crowd pleaser there!.. Some guests stayed all 5 hours and ate breakfast and lunch. There were lots of happy kids and parents and they had very positive comments about the event.

Range Work Party
Monday April 19th 9AM
We are going to perform some needed maintenance and could use all the help we can get. We will be hauling away the scrap lumber and debris at the range and cleaning out and organizing the connex and shed. Your help would be great, not just the usual 6 people who keep things working. Show up at 9AM, the coffee will be hot and the doughnuts fresh!

Range Familiarization Class was a big success!
We had 30 members show up and were walked through range procedures and safety that applied to our range. We covered the different shoots we have at our range and examples were set up. Members were able to get questions answered about the different shoots. Then everyone spent a couple hours shooting at the different targets set up and enjoyed a BBQ lunch by 4-H Citizen & Leadership Club.
1st Youth Shoot of the year was GREAT!
The first shoot was great! We followed the range safety class and used all the different targets. We had some new shooters and a lot of returning veterans. We had several new rifles in the program, shot a LOT of .22 ammo and went through a lot of black powder. Everyone had a great time.
The Family Fun Shoot is
 Saturday, May 8th 10AM to 3PM
We can use all the help we can get. It generally takes 20 volunteers to put this shoot on effectively. We will need people to help BBQ, sit at several booths with information, coach on the line and help with paperwork and the raffle. Coaches will provide one on one instruction at the bench in safety, handling and marksmanship. Coach training will be just prior to the event. All the coaching is basic and lasts 2 to 5 mins per shooter depending on the station. Please contact Rick or Jill for more info if you can help out. 994-7531

Shoot-what-ya-brung II

Shootwhatchabrung II was a big success. We had twelve shooters, one of them was a junior, and he stole the show. We shot at the traditional poker chip targets that we have used since the event began, but this time we used the really good thick ones. Wow, will they take a hit. Suspended bottles of wine fell to rimfires, centerfires, and pistols, after the poker chip link in the strings holding them up was shattered.

The last bottle hanging, was the dreaded rope. This target took us a couple of hundred rounds last time to shoot down. Not so today. We had about eight or nine shooters into the first round of the event. Trevor Brookes stepped up, and with his trusty .30-.30, dead centered the rope, sending the bottle to the ground.

I  then asked the shooters present if any of them had ever shot at the edge of a playing card. They all replied no. So, six slots were cut in the top of the target frame, and cards were inserted, with the edge facing the shooters. Two more cards were suspended from some of the strings left from the previous shoot to flutter in the wind. If someone had told me, I would see what I saw, I would have laughed. These guys took to this like a duck to water. Pieces of cards began fluttering to the ground as they were cut in half with rifles, and pistols ( Tony was impressive). And, sure enough Trevor stepped up, and cut a card, with his old .30-.30. Tell me super bowl is going to be better than this.
I DON'T THINK SO.
TTYL.

KRGC January 2009 Newsletter
Next meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 20th 2009 at 6:30pm at the Kelseyville High School. Go in the main entrance, top of the rise to the right. Don't miss it. Lots of info about new and returning events and activities!

Dear Members,

The newsletter that will be mailed to members who want a paper copy will be the usual black and white print. Members with an e-mail address will receive a link to this page for a media rich, colorfull version of the newsletter. I encourage all members to provide an e-mail address. Last year we spent over $1,700.00 on postage for the newsletters. In this electronic age, this is unreasonable. We are hoping to save over $1,000.00 with this style of newsletter.
Check out the newsletter on the www.krgc.org website.
2008 KRGC Dinner

The dinner was attended by approximately 175 guests and was great. The food was delicious and the setting gave everyone plenty of room.10 guns were raffled off including 2 guns that went to youth members. Dozens of prizes were raffled off and there were lots of winners. We do not yet have any photos but that will soon change.
Events updates
New steel targets have been ordered and will be here any day. There is a rack of plates, cross over dueling silhouettes, steel poppers and dueling trees. These targets are heavy gauge steel and can be used with rifles, handguns and black powder guns. They should add fun activities to all the shoots. Pictures coming soon, or better yet, come out to the shoots and shoot them for yourself!

There will be a meeting this month for all the event coordinators to go over new proceedures, set dates and present website content for each event. Watch the events pages for changes coming very soon.
Hunter Education
Starting Monday, January 19th at 6:30pm, Phil Phillips and Frank Dimauro will be teaching a Hunter Education course for new hunters. It runs 4 evening 2 hour classes and all day on one Saturday. Their style of teaching has one of the highest success rates in the state, especially for youth hunters. Check the KRGC calendar for more details including contact info.

Found item
During the summer a member found a very nice rifle rest/vise on a bench at the range. He left notes at the range in an attempt to contact the owner that it was found and held for safe keeping. If anyone knows who left the rest/vise at the range, contact us at info@krgc.org so we can get it back to them.

This month everyone will get a printed, mailed copy of the newsletter to let everyone know about the new E-mail version.  Please compare the two and let us know what you think!
Sincerely,

ShootWhatYa'Brung
Quick Links
ShootWhatYa'Brung
If the turnout for the Shootwhatchabrung is any indication 2009 is going to be great. We had fourteen paid participants, and a half dozen looky-loos. We had two brand new members on the line, and a couple of ladies. Everything from smooth bore muzzleloaders, to single shot. 22's, to .454 magnum hand guns, to centerfire rifles. We had some of everything. Pascoe won a bottle, Carolyn won one as well. I warned them that if they let me win one they would never hear the end of it since I lost my glasses Christmas shopping, and either couldn't see the sights, or the target, depending on whether I was shooting with a scope, or iron sights. Bad luck for them I got one as well. Bert got at least one, and Jay got one. The Wild Turkey was a long drawn out affair since many people went home after the Chili Nacho lunch. Phil Phillips showed up just as we started the final match, and bought in. After  an hour of solid shooting he shot it down with his muzzleloader, about  five minutes after two o'clock. Perfect timing.

I wish you folks could have been there.

Range Maintenance
Range maintenance donations have totaled more than $2600.00! This is great. Because of this we are moving forward with installing 3 benches between the shade supports.
Membership
New cards will be out soon. Printing on both sides takes longer so they were delayed. The new gate code will be on the back. The combination will not be changed until members are notified.

Calendar Range Dates

Check the website or inquire at info@krgc.org about reserving the range. Please do not call the Sheriff's Dept about dates. There are over 400 KRGC members. Debbie at the Sheriff's Dept can not and is not expected to answer those requests. The calendar and website are updated daily or when any changes are needed.

Dear Members,
The January Board of Directors meeting of the Konocti Rod and Gun Club was held at the 4H Office, Wednesday January 14th. I asked Sheriff's Office Range Master Don McPherson to attend. The reason for this invitation was to encourage a better working partnership between our membership and the Sheriff's Office, and to address problems that are occurring on both ranges. It is obvious to me now, that this meeting should have happened some time ago.

The following behavior on our range, and the Sheriff's range, will change immediately.
There will be NO vehicles on the pistol range.
There will be NO shooting from under the covered porch of the Sheriff's range building.
Leave NO spent casings or hulls on the Sheriff's range.
DO NOT shoot at anything on the range that you did not bring yourself, and when you are finished, take it with you.
All targets on the pistol range will be placed AT the berm.
There will be NO vehicles down range on the rifle range after the first rain in the fall, unless it is in connection with a match, and the match director deems it necessary.
DO NOT shoot at cans, bottles, rocks, or anything else on the GROUND! ALL targets should be suspended on a target frame, so the bullets impact the bank on the pistol range, or the 100 or 200 yard bank on the rifle range.
DO NOT come to the range with the hopes of "FINDING" a target. If you find a target, it probably isn't there to be shot up. Bring your targets, shoot them, and take them home with you.
Take ALL of your garbage with you. It has come to our attention that the garbage cans on the range only encourage some members to leave their junk, so they will be removed.

The Konocti Rod and Gun Club will take the following actions to insure these rules are respected.

A gate will be placed across the driveway that leads onto the rifle range. This will be locked in the fall, and not opened until it dries out in the spring.
Club officers, and event coordinators, will monitor range use and possibly phograph offenders. Offenders will be reported to the Sheriff's Office.
Electronic monitoring of the range is another possibility, if the problems persist.
Garbage cans on the rifle range will be removed.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office may take the following measures to insure these rules are respected.

Offenders will be removed from the range and their privileges revoked. Returning to the range, even for an event, may result in arrest.
Locking the range gate for a period with no club use.
Requiring a certified range master present anytime there is any shooting on the range.

Konocti Rod and Gun Club President                             Sheriff's Office Range Master
Marty Klier                                                                        Don McPherson

Recent Shoots
Last month the first NRA Rimfire Silhouette match was held with a great turn out. It was followed by the first Rimfire Varmint Silhouette shoot. Everyone had a great time. New steel animal silhouettes were used.

Photo Releases Required
Photo releases are now required for photos to be placed on our website. The form can be printed off our website. Appleseed Project
During the January meeting, Warren Fox mentioned "The Appleseed Project", a marksmanship program based on the historical, revolutionary marksman. From their website, "Why you? Well, that's simple: if you're on this web page we're betting you're a patriot, and we hope you answer the call.
http://www.appleseedinfo.org/
What's a rifleman?
In short, a rifleman is an armed American, trained in the tradition of American Liberty. It's a man who has learned to shoot a rifle accurately - accurate enough to score "expert" on the Army Qualification Course. Until you can do that, you're considered a "Cook," unprepared and unqualified to carry a rifle on the           firing line of freedom. But after attending an Appleseed AQT shoot, you'll have the credentials necessary to be a true rifleman, and will understand the critical need for defending freedom in this country. The RWVA is dedicated to the Appleseed Program and encourages every American to learn to shoot.""  More information is being gathered to see if there is an interest for our club to hold one of these shoots.

Anti-Super Bowl Shoot

Remember, America is a FREE country. We can hold any belief was choose. Some choose not to worship at the altar of the PigSkin. Some might not even watch football. Some chose to leave their homes and go to the range to shoot on Superbowl Sunday. I heard there were people lined up at each shooting bench taking turns. WOW, thats shooting dedication. This was not a scheduled event, a bunch of shooters ended up showing up at the range at the same time and had a great time. Though there were a few disparaging comments made about the Superbowl, I bet many of them made it home before the 3:24PM kick off. Either way, that's how the Anti-Superbowl Shoot came to life that clear Sunday morning.
I hope you enjoy the E-mail newsletter. Please forward it to friends and family so they can see what we are doing and what they are missing.
Sincerely,

Rick Walker

Steel Targets
The steel reactive targets purchased for the handgun shoot arrived. A group got together and assembled them. Then they were tested out and adjusted. These are heavy duty, quality targets. . The calibers tested did fine, .38, 9mm and .45.
Unfortunately .22 magnums do not have enough energy to knock them down.

The Family Fun Shoot was big success. We had about 100 people there. Lots of volunteers showed up and helped out. Lots of safety brochures and free gun locks were handed out. Lots of people drooled over Larry Priest's Military rifle display as well as the Winchesters Roger Van De Walker brought out to shoot.

Date: Aug 1st and 2nd 2009, Saturday and Sunday

Where: KRGC Range

Cost: $75 covers both days. Single day, $45 FREE for shooters 18 and under. It is recommended if you can only attend one day, to make it Saturday because the bulk of the instruction takes place on Saturday.

http://www.appleseedinfo.org/

What is Project Appleseed?
Appleseed is a program that instructs Americans on the traditional rifle marksmanship skills that have been passed down from generation to generation, along with reconnecting today's Americans with the people and events of the Founding era. Participants are taught fundamental rifle marksmanship skills that are required to allow a Rifleman to be accurate out to 500 yards, with iron sights, standard rifle and surplus ammo. This is the traditional 'Rifleman's Quarter mile', which is an uniquely American Rifleman skill, that has been part of this nation from the very first days. Most of the instruction at an Appleseed is conducted at 25 meters, at reduced size targets to simulate 100 to 500 yards. This well proven technique allows us to concentrate on the shooter's mechanics and less time walking a range. At those locations that allow for actual distance shooting, participants are often able to see first hand that the skills that they learn at 25 meters directly apply to actual distances out to 500 yards. These foundational skills are not being passed on to future generations, and so Appleseeds are great for new or experienced shooters alike.

Why "Appleseed?"
"Appleseed" comes from Johnny Appleseed, the American folk hero who toured the country, planting appleseeds so that future generations would benefit. The Appleseed Project is designed to ensure the next generations will the benefit of the same Liberties as the generations before them.

Why the "Nationwide Tour?"
The Appleseed Instructors will travel anywhere in the nation, bringing the proven Appleseed course, as a complete, self-contained package, to your range/club/farm, so that you and your neighbors can experience Appleseed in your back yard.

What's your real agenda?
We seek to do three things: teach marksmanship and respect for the tradition of such, and to preserve the knowledge of our Revolutionary War history. That's all we're about, plain and simple. We believe that if we teach it, it'll wake our fellow Americans...and an awake America is an America that cannot be defeated. We want freedom to ring strong. We want Lady Liberty to be safe.
Being a Rifleman means more than accurate shooting. It means a love of liberty, a respect for our forefathers, and an acknowledgement of the debt of honor we owe to them. We believe this debt can never fully be paid back, but we believe that by keeping the faith and passing our teachings on it will certainly reflect our ability to pay what we can, and fulfill the obligation we have to future generations to pass on a nation that is as free as the one we inherited.

What kind of rifle do I need? What kind of sights are allowed?
Appleseed is content-free, so in regards to sights: you can use any. Rifles? Well, you can use any safe firearm which can be accurately shot from the shoulder, from a .22 to a .32 (8mm). We're semi-auto and bolt-gun friendly. The important thing is that it works, so before you come to a shoot make sure you clean it, break it in (if need be), and lube it properly in preparation for the day. Due to the high cost of ammo, we reccommend using a .22 for the training on Saturday and if the range you are shooting at has a long distance range, then bring your center fire rifle for that on Sunday.

*There are no more trash cans at the range. This shouldn't be much of an inconvenience. If it fit it your vehicle to get it to the range, it will probably fit in your vehicle to take it away. Just bring a trash bag or plastic shopping bag to put your trash in to take it home.

Got Guns?
What's in your safe and your closet? Unused guns, old guns, broken guns,  not sure? This is the perfect time to pass on the tradition! Think of the future of some of you guns. Will they all be enjoyed and fired at the range or used for hunting? Are they going to end up given away or turned over to the Sheriff to be destroyed? How would you like your unused guns to be used to safely train the next generation of gun owners and shooters? Haven't thought about donating some of your unused firearms before? NOW is the time to consider it!  We can make that happen right now!
Youth Shooting Sports is accepting donations of all types of firearms. Rifles, pistols, shotguns, and black powder firearms.  All types and calibers. Every firearm is very useful for training. Our program has State level instructors in all of these disciplines and all donated firearms would inspected, repaired if necessary and used in the best interest of the program. We have an FFL dealer available to conduct the transfers at no cost to the donor. All donors will receive a tax deductible receipt of tranfer.
All donations will be greatly appreciated. Call Rick Walker 994-7531 or info@krgc.org .... Thank you for checking your safes.

Questions? Check out their website and/or call Marty Klier 263-3380
*We are currently exploring the possibility of building a small hanggun range at the end of our rifle range for use by our members if the pistol range is in use. More as it develops.
*There have been unscheduled closures of the pistol range lately for Law Enforcement training. We are working hard to minimize this inconvenience. No one wants a wasted trip to the range. There are some ideas being discussed that would probably put an end to this. We will keep you posted.

*A gate has been installed on the road that leads out to the 100 and 200 yard lines. It will remain locked until the range has dried out enough to support traffic. We tried for years to rely on people's judgment but there was always someone who thought it was dry enough and got stuck, tearing up the road. That always required them to be towed out, tearing things up even more.

LADIES SHOOT
The evening of Thursday, July 23, 6:30pm-8:30pm has been reserved for you to go to the range and enjoy shooting pistols with other women. All you need is your firearm, a holster and 100 rounds of ammo. Two range safety officers will be present.  If you are interested, please call Carolyn Boardman at 263-0601 or e-mail her at krgcmc@gmail.com.

A new addition on the range.
On the left corner of the 200 yard range (210 yards) we now have a 1/2"x 3'x4' steel plate, 2 cylinder halves , a smaller piece of tubing and a 8"x12" piece of steel all hung on drill pipe.  The cylinder halves have a bell like tone when you whack them. The posts are about 7" diameter steel pipe and the cross arm is drill pipe.  All very tough stuff, but, still no match for a 30-06.
Shoot at the hanging stuff with anything you have.

PLEASE do NOT shoot anything that's painted YELLOW.  We have to thank Tony Serrano and Kelseyville metal shop for the main tubes and drill pipe.  Carl Hoke did the welding and the assembly.  Everyone have fun shooting this stuff and thank the men that put it together when you see them.

Youth Shoot Report
12 Youth Shooter came out Satuday. KRGC, 4-H and Boy Scouts were represented. Two of the attendees from Boy Scouts and their parents, will be joining the club at the Tuesday meeting!  Shooters enjoyed steel spinners and the motorized gallery steel targets. Lots of rounds hit their mark with a cloud of flour from our flour filled targets. Cheap and very entertaining.
See you at the range!

The Appleseed Project
It was moving. Even that description is an understatement. This was not just a marksmanship course in the theme of the American Revolution. The instructors passed on stories and descriptions of the people involved in the start of the war that gave birth to our country! The events and reasons for the confrontations and battles. They made it real for everyone in attendance. Some were famous, many were not. You got to know some of the unsung or little known people involved that made huge differences. You got to contemplate their circumstances, their fates and their accomplishments and sacrifices. From a 14 year old girl to an 80 year old man, most you probably never heard of, or will ever forget once you have.

It was an experience all who attended will remember for the rest of their lives. It refreshed your pride in the accomplishments of our nation from the acts of the common citizens, pressed into service and choosing to serve.

 http://www.appleseedinfo.org/

There is a strong interest in hosting another Appleseed Shoot at our range. Check out the information on their website and talk to those who attended. I strongly encourage anyone who attended the shoot to come out to the next club meeting and share your experience. I would hope it would inspire many more to attend the next one. I know I won't miss it..

*** LADIES SHOOT
This recent event was held Thursday, July 23, 6:30pm-8:30pm. The participants had a great time becoming more familiar with their handguns and shooting about 100 rounds. Two range safety officers were on site to assist and instruct. If you are interested in future Ladies Shoots, please email Carolyn Boardman at at krgcmc@gmail.com.

The final 2009 Youth Shoot and BBQ was great! We had many different reactive targets and steel out to shoot at. We went through about 3000 rounds of rim fire. One youth brought out his Mosin and rang the 200 yard bell quite a few times. Several worked on their Marksmanship Qualification. The hotdogs were delicious and you couldn't beat the good company.
See you next year.
A new addition on the range.
On the left corner of the 200 yard range (210 yards) we now have a 1/2"x 3'x4' steel plate, 2 cylinder halves , a smaller piece of tubing and a 8"x12" piece of steel all hung on drill pipe.  The cylinder halves have a bell like tone when you hit them. The posts are about 7" diameter steel pipe and the cross arm is drill pipe.  All very tough stuff, but, still no match for a 30-06. Shoot at the hanging stuff with anything you have.
During the recent Youth Shoot everyone had fun with these targets. You can even hear a .22 round ring the bell!!! It was something to see a 9 year old with a Chipmunk rifle ring the bell from the bench, at 200 yards! WOW!

PLEASE do NOT shoot anything that's painted YELLOW.  We have to thank Tony Serrano and Kelseyville High School metal shop for the main tubes and drill pipe.  Carl Hoke did the welding and the assembly.  Everyone have fun shooting this stuff and thank the men that put it together when you see them.

*There may be some heavy earth moving at the range in the near future to level it out and raise the burm between the ranges. We will keep you posted on any closures this may create.

*There are no more trash cans at the range. This shouldn't be much of an inconvenience. If it fit it your vehicle to get it to the range, it will probably fit in your vehicle to take it away. Just bring a trash bag or plastic shopping bag to put your trash in to take it home.

Member Appreciation Dinner
The dinner last Saturday was great. Except for the acoustics. It was really hard to hear anything.
The food was great, the music was tropical and the people were the best!
It was amazing, all 5 guns put out in the raffle were WON! It was great. Ok, that part may only have been great for the winners, but you could see they were very happy.
All the high shooters for the year and all the people who coordinate and run shoots were recognized with KRGC hats and certificates of appreciation. A list will be sent out when I get one.
Take care.

Range Maintenance/Development Donation

It is that time of year again. Range Maintenance/Development donations are generally paid along with your annual dues.

A word about Range Maintenance and Development. Any donation is voluntary and very much appreciated. Last year members stepped up and our range maintenance fund allowed us to make needed improvements quickly and purchase some equipment that will continue to maintain the range.

There are about a dozen regular volunteers who make things happen and get things done on and around the range. These include the individuals who come out for work parties on special projects as well as the people who coordinate and run the different shoots. A monthly shoot conducted from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM is over 100 hours just for the person putting it on. One project this year was drainage improvement that required a backhoe for an entire day. The equipment was generously donated for that project.

Some projects and improvements are delayed trying to find volunteers and donated equipment and materials. A larger Range Maintenance and Development fund would allow our club to purchase materials and if needed, hire a contractor to complete the work more quickly.  The range is currently clean and well organized. Thank you all who help keep it that way.

Think of the last time you were out at the range. It didn't get that way by itself. Everyone in the club is a volunteer when they help out and it is greatly appreciated. There are a lot of projects that could be done this coming year with enough resources.

How much is 8 hours of your time worth? If you can't come out and help, then help the ones that can by donating generously to the Range Maintenance and Development fund.

Remember -
You get one raffle ticket in a special drawing for the rifle, for every $20 you donate to the range maintenance/development fund.

Dear fellow KRGC members and friends, Thought I'd write a little note of encouragement for the upcoming year.I'm really looking forward to another great year of competition in our many events. I've been shooting sporting rifle hear for at least 15 years; even so I'm a newcomer compared to some. When I started shooting here, I had read much but never had any competition experience. My first few matches I was very nervous and fumbled with my gear. Some great people and fantastic shooters bent over backward to help me.I became more comfortable on match day but envied the scores of the top shooters, and wondered if I could ever shoot scores close to there's. Finally my scores have improved to where if everyone else has a bad day and I have a good one, I can win the match! I look forward to visiting with you all at all the matches I can make. I am going to try to shoot high power this year too. The Rick's guns shooting team will try to make a much higher effort this year too. I would like to apologize for my lack of preparation in 2009 and encourage you all to come out,try something new, try something old, try something with a new mindset. Lets make 2010 a standout year in our shooting sports.  Jay

Shoot-what-ya-brung II

Shootwhatchabrung II was a big success. We had twelve shooters, one of them was a junior, and he stole the show. We shot at the
traditional poker chip targets that we have used since the event
began, but this time we used the really good thick ones. Wow, will they take a hit. Suspended bottles of wine fell to rimfires, centerfires, and pistols, after the poker chip link in the strings
holding them up was shattered.

I  then asked the shooters present if any of them had ever shot at
the edge of a playing card. They all replied no. So, six slots were
cut in the top of the target frame, and cards were inserted, with the edge facing the shooters. I DON'T THINK
SO. TTYL.
